TITLE: "ALL GREAT MINDS DON'T THINK ALIKE!"

No two brains are alike! Everyone learns differently — due to genetics, environment and experiences.
Brain research is a new field of study and provides us with many important insights into the learning
process. These research findings are important for both learners and instructors. This session covers
three important topics: 1) Learning, the Job of the Brain, 2) How The Brain Learns, 3) Teaching Strategies. Learning is the brain's job - learning is what the brain is designed to do, and you can't stop it! The brain is constantly bombarded with information through the senses. What are the indicators/behaviors which provide clues to HOW a person processes information.? Why do some brains seem to be better information processors than others - is it the brain, the environment, the instructional strategies, or the critical thinking skills? Is it "nature" or "nurture?" How do drugs or alcohol affect learning? Some of the topics to be discussed are: Effect of Emotional Intelligence (EQ) on Learning, Passive vs Active Learning, Four Levels of Cognition, The Magic 7, Analytic vs Global Attributes of Learning, L-brain, R-brain & whole brain learning, Impact of Stress on Learning.

TITLE: PM NOT A DISABLED LEARNER! I LEARNING DIFFERENTLY.
(Understanding & Teaching Adults with "Learning Disabilities")

Most individuals, at one time or another, have experienced difficulty learning something. However, the individual that experiences extreme difficulty, no matter how the material is presented, is often referred to as having a "learning disability." These individuals really aren't "disabled learners", they learn differently and require a variety of different instructional approaches and learning activities in or to be successful learners. Most classrooms and instructional materials are designed for 'visual' learners and those students who are not successful in settings designed for visual learners find it difficult, frustrating and discouraging. This in turn causes them to doubt their intelligence lowers their self-esteem (feelings of self-worth) This session will look at the different types of severe learning problems which interfere with a persons ability to function successfully in today's sophisticated and complex society, workplace and world. Topics to be discussed include DYSLEXIA, ADD./ADHD; what are they and what can be done? This session will include valuable informal assessment techniques, an in-depth look at some of the learning problems, but more importantly, instructional techniques, accommodations and materials which can be targeted to specific problems. Information about other available resources will be provided. Participants are encouraged to use this session as a "clinic" in which specific problems they are experi encing with students can be used as "case studies" and discussed by the group, and then suggestions provided for meeting the needs of these students.
